The Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) Decarbonisation of Road Treatments Asset Management Technical Training Day was a pivotal event, uniting Local Highway Authorities (LHAs) and industry experts to explore sustainable solutions for road maintenance. I had the privilege of presenting on Where Highway Maintenance Fits in the Carbon Lifecycle, focusing on the critical role of decarbonisation in asset management.
My presentation emphasised integrating carbon considerations across all stages of highway maintenance—from planning and design to construction and upkeep. By adopting low-carbon materials, optimising treatment schedules, and leveraging innovative technologies, LHAs can achieve significant reductions in carbon emissions while improving financial and operational efficiencies.
The event showcased a range of actionable strategies, from carbon-neutral road treatments to data-driven asset management. The collaborative atmosphere highlighted the industry’s shared commitment to sustainability and the tangible progress being made.
The RSTA training day underscored the importance of collective action in achieving net-zero goals. It was an inspiring reminder that, through innovation and collaboration, we can build a more sustainable and resilient road network for the future.
