Issue Identified
LMS Highways identified, as part of their continuing dedication to their sustainability plan, that they produce a large amount of CO2e and that they have a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements.
Their overall aim is to ‘follow and promote good sustainability practices, to reduce the environmental impact of all activities as well as offset carbon as they move toward being carbon neutral’.
In 2021, National Highways, formally known as Highways England, announced its ambitious carbon plan that looked at rapidly cutting carbon from road construction, maintenance and operations, and support the transition to zero emission vehicles.
As part of this plan NH’s contractors and suppliers have been required to act by making commitments to reduce carbon year-on-year by using the latest technologies, so that by 2040 all road maintenance and construction carried out on the Strategic Road Network will be net-zero. As part of this they have put in place requirements for their contractors and suppliers to work to PAS 2080:2023.
